Is Meal Prepping Healthy?
A healthy diet is one of the most important aspects of a healthy lifestyle. And while this is true whether or not you are hoping to lose weight, it becomes even more vital if you are hoping to do so. Without a healthy diet, even the most dedicated of workout routines won’t be quite as effective as they could be, and you might find yourself plateauing despite daily activity.
What is meal prep?
Standing for “meal preparation”, meal prep generally refers to planning and cooking your meals for the week ahead of time. For things that can’t be made in advance, like avocado salad, you can combine as many ingredients as possible and keep the ingredients grouped together so making the meal is as quick and easy as can be. And planning and preparing your meals on a Sunday ensures that they are as fresh as possible throughout the week, improving the flavor and giving you something to look forward to every day. Don’t forget to pick up plenty of food storage! Large, covered containers are often the best choice for meals as well beverages or soup.
How should I start?
Getting started with meal prep is fairly straightforward, but there are still some important steps to keep in mind. First, plan your week wisely. If you are eating something that won’t stay fresh all week, for example, then you’ll want to place that meal towards the beginning of the week, Similarly, if you know that you are usually especially busy on a particular day, keep the meal options as easy to grab and eat as possible to limit the temptation to grab fast food or buy something from a vending machine. Set yourself up for success by paying attention to your daily routines and adjusting your calendar accordingly – don’t pick a particularly complex meal on a day when you have little time or energy to spare.
Once you have your calendar planned, make sure you have all of the ingredients you need on hand. It’s a good idea to go shopping after creating your meal plan – this not only helps ensure that your food is fresh, it also helps avoid the common impulse purchases that are common when we go shopping with no plan. When you know exactly what you need to buy and why, the grocery shopping process becomes an easy one to complete.
Next, sort your ingredients out and decide if you can prepare the meal ahead of time or if there are elements that must be assembled the day you plan on eating the meal in question. Prepare everything you can ahead of time, including breakfast and snacks. Portion everything out into meal-sized (or snack-sized) amounts to resist the temptation to overeat and organize everything by day and meal in the refrigerator. Again, this helps make it easy to eat well during the week.
